SPANISH airline Iberia has pulled a cartoon video ad that depicts a baby boy frolicking on a beach with big-breasted black Cuban women after complaints it insulted women and encouraged sexual tourism.

This is another iberia ad about a lamb from Spain who wins a trip to New York. According to what I have read, this one did not spark the outrage caused by the Cuba commercial...

As part of the same series, a trip to Buenos Aires, Argentina is one. When I contrast and compare Iberia's images of the Cubans, NYers and Argentinians, I am not pleased. What do you think?

I have had a personal experience with Argentines. When I worked for EEPC (Engineering Export Promotion Council of India), from a small office in Chicago, I very frequently called CEOs and other decision makers of engineering companies throughout Latin America, of course including Argentina. I enjoyed speaking to them in Spanish.

A CEO of Argentina liked the way I did my job while trying to convince him to make a trip to India to attend a "buyers-sellers meet." He sent me a tourism vhs tape about Argentina and the main "selling point" was that Argentina is more than 90% European, according to the tape. After watching the tape I didn't bother to respond to him.

Soon afterwards, he called me and asked me what I thought about the tape and about the possibility of moving to Argentina to work for him. He also offered to send me a round trip ticket so that I could come and check out his operation. I told him that it was an interesting proposition and that I had to think about it. He then told me that "En la Argentina no tenemos ese problema de los negros como el que tienen ustedes allá en Estados Unidos. Somos europeos. ¿No lo viste en la película?"

I didn't bother to tell him that I was one of those "problems" that he was referring to, and just told him that I would think about it. I was very tempted to make the trip just to see the look on his face when I, one of the "problems" exited the plane. That almost would have been worth the trip!
